Our individual independence isn't something that we usually think about on a daily basis until that autonomy is threatened by an injury; be it physical, mental or cognitive.
When that happens, Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants play an important role in returning that independence to the patients who lack it. A COTA's day-to-day can include helping patients with disabilities participate fully in school and social situations, helping people recover from injury to regain skills and provide support for adults experiencing physical and cognitive changes. A COTA also educates patients on restrictions, body mechanics, breathing, edema control, range of motion, fine motor skills, and the use of adaptive equipment.
